Iberostar

We know that inquiring (and anxious) minds want to know! Antonio Banderas has that effect when he’s onscreen – but we also happen to think that in this case it has a little something to do with another star – the gorgeous new Iberostar Cancun. We’ve heard you – you love it!

Before we get to the actual winner, here are the answers to our contest’s six questions:

Q: In Desperado, Banderas plays a tough guy with a guitarist past. Which Iberostar country is the character from?
A: Mexico (ay, chihuahua, kind of a no-brainer, eh?)

Q: Which European city was the backdrop for the film version of Evita, in which Banderas starred with Madonna?
A: Budapest (site of Iberostar’s newest property, the Grand Hotel Budapest, covered in our blog when it opened last summer)

Q: The lead characters of The Mambo Kings (one of which is of course played by our redoubtable Antonio) left this, their native country, to make it in the States. Which Iberostar destination is it?
A: Cuba (Ricky Ricardo, move over!)

Q: In his latest, the animated Puss in Boots, Banderas voices the fearless feline. Where’s this kool kitty from?
A: Spain (finally, Antonio’s home country – not to mention Iberostar’s!)

Q: Antonio and Angelina Jolie make an explosive pair in 2001′s high-octane Original Sin. Where’s this one shot (so to speak)?
A: Mexico (again – hey, what can we say, it’s an exciting place)

Q: Black Gold casts Banderas as an oil-fevered emir in Arabia. In which country (with ten Iberostar hotels) was it filmed?
A: Tunisia (no oil, but oh so lovely beaches and cool historic sites)

So, did you get ‘em all right? Seems like we’ve got a lot of Banderas and Iberostar experts out there, because almost half of you did. But unfortunately there could only be one winner, chosen by random drawing, of our all-expenses paid trip for two to the new Iberostar Cancun. A hearty congratulations to Robin Seeger! You could say this is one blockbuster of a prize, Robin, and we hope you’ll tell us all about your trip!

And the rest of you, don’t despair, guys. Stay tuned, because we’ve got a lot more cool contests coming up, starting next month…

He’s souave, sexy and charming and he has won the hearts of many with his seductive Spanish accent. Antonio Banderas, a multi-talented actor, director and producer, might just be the most famous Spanish celebrity in Hollywood – having starred in numerous major blockbusters like Evita, Interview with the Vampire, Philadelphia, Desperado, The Mask of Zorro and the Shrek sequels.

Born and raised in Malaga, Spain, Antonio had never thought of becoming an actor, until he broke his foot at the age of fourteen, thwarting his dream of becoming a professional soccer player. His talents were first discovered by the eccentric world-famous Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar, who cast him in various movies in the 1980s. This launched his international career and spurred him on to appear in numerous Hollywood films.

Staying Grounded in Spain

Despite earning worldwide success, Antonio stays very rooted in his origins. Besides calling Spain home, he has also made sure to make Andalusia known to the outside world. In his latest project – the animation film, The Missing Lynx – the natural parks of Andalusia were used as its backdrop. Besides that, he has also invested parts of his film earnings in Andalusian products to keep the local industry alive.

Although his career has brought him all over the world, Marbella is one place that keeps him coming back again and again. Since the 1990s, he has been a regular visitor to Marbella along with his wife Melanie Griffith. They own a house in Los Monteros and even their daughter was born here in Marbella. But they’re not the only celebrities here, the beautiful beach town in the Malaga province is also home to quite a handful of celebrities like Sean Connery, Mike Reid and Joan Collins.

A Celebrity Magnet

Once you’re here though, it’s easy to see why they have all fallen for this town. It’s almost like the Miami of Spain, but without the glitz and glamour – its wide beachfront boulevard lined with swaying palm trees, sandy beaches dotted with al fresco bars and city streets cluttered with modern boutiques. Besides lounging on the beach and soaking up its undercurrents, there are a few sights to see in town as well, such as the Bonsai Museum, Contemporary Museum and the nearby Puerto Banús for the latest fashion and hip restaurants. But best of all, you might just bump into a celebrity here – so groupies, be on the alert!

Mexican Town

Guitar case full of weapons, guns swinging from each hand, whole bars full of villains wiped out by one man and his sharp shooting. It is surely the hallmark of only one man, an actor who can keep both a male and female audience simultaneously breathless (if for very different reasons). Antonio Banderas as “El Mariachi” cuts a lonesome, brooding and very dangerous figure wandering through small town Mexico; dangerous that is if you are on the wrong side of the law in the violent world of the Mexico Trilogy.

El Mariachi

The three movies (“El Mariachi,” “Desperado” and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”) tell a fairly flimsy story of drug barons, gun runners and small towns terrorised by bands of marauding criminals. But few fans of the movies really care about the quality of the plots. With Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek providing the eye candy and the body count rising higher than the heat in the Mexican desert, there’s barely a moment to pause for breath in these action-packed movies.

Yet perhaps one of the unsung stars of the trilogy of movies is the Mexican landscape that serves as a backdrop. While much of the production took place on the US border the small cities and towns in Mexico that feature heavily in the action could have been chosen in almost any region. The dilapidated buildings, the deserted midday streets and the clouds of dust are typical of small towns from one end of Mexico to the other.

Small town Mexico

For those on vacation in the popular resorts of the Yucatan peninsula perhaps the best place to experience a little of this ‘old world’ Mexico is the town of Valladolid. It’s a handy stop on the way to the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza although it still attracts relatively few tourists. Drive into the centre of the city and you’ll soon feel as though you’re entering El Mariachi country. Stroll a few blocks through the streets and your initial impressions may grow stronger.

One thing you won’t find here is the danger of El Mariachi’s world. Valladolid is a pleasant, almost sleepy town where very little happens. People pass the day in the central plaza and most of the main events take place in the church that dominates the center. Step into one of the bars scattered around the town and you’re more than likely to come across a traveling musician. Unlike Antonio Banderas’s character, though, his case is likely to hold nothing more than a real guitar.

Antonio Banderas is widely known and loved as a movie star, but today the hunky Latin lover brings you a totally different stellar experience: Another opportunity to win a luxury Iberostar getaway for two, with our “A Suite for Banderas” contest. We’re talking 6 nights and 7 days at our new Iberostar Cancún, including flights!

As most of you know, on December 1 we’re opening our latest Iberostar property in Mexico: The Iberostar Cancún. We’ve invested more than $100 million to renovate and make the resort even more spectacular. As part of our celebration, we’re launching a fun new contest centered on our friend Antonio Banderas, brand spokesman for Iberostar, who will attend our inaugural festivities in early 2012. During his stay, he will bunk in the very suite that one of you will name, so be creative: What would be a fitting name for a luxury suite where a star of Banderas’ magnitude will stay?

We never stop coming up with ways to make you feel like “stars,” so if you want to be the star of this particular contest and win a trip to the Iberostar Cancún in Mexico, go to our “A Suite for Banderas” tab on our Facebook page to enter. Just tell us what you would name the suite where the actor will stay, and ask your friends to vote for you, as only those entries with more than 20 votes will be considered by our panel. Good luck to all our Stars!
