Jamaica cries out to be explored. To do this you can go hiking through the labyrinth of narrow paths that crisscross and wind through the highlands of the Jamaican forest, visiting its rivers and fascinating waterfalls.
The most salient excursion is to the Blue Mountains. The misty peaks and green slopes are washed by the heaviest rains in Jamaica, and the forest is home to butterflies, over 200 species of birds, many of which are only found in Jamaica, over 500 plant species and a great number of orchids. Some of the paths can be covered on horseback or riding a bicycle.
Known as a diver’s paradise, the Caribbean offers underwater adventures that are not to be missed. Eels, rays and schools of tropical fishes are plentiful in the waters around Jamaica, as well as sea turtles, and also sharks and barracudas. The water is usually not very deep, making this the perfect place to learn the secrets of diving. Not to be missed are the reefs around Jamaica: Shark Reef, Coral Garden and Fantasy Reef, with tunnels and caves featuring colorful and luminous coral formations. There are many cruises and excursions taking you out to sea, where you can get in the water and do some snorkeling.
Other water sports you can practice are windsurfing, kayaking, riding the waters on a hobie cat, water skiing, riding a bamboo canoe on the Grane River and doing some rafting on the Martha Brae River.
Jamaica has some of the best places for deep sea fishing and stages two great sports fishing events: the International Fishing Tournament and the International Marlin Tournament of Jamaica. You can hire the equipment needed for this sport, regardless of whether you are a beginner or a seasoned fisherman.
