If you go to Praia do Forte you have to make it a point to visit the national headquarters of Projeto Tamar, the ambitious project for the protection of sea turtles in Brazil. It is calculated that each season the project protects around 14,000 nests and approximately 650,000 hatchlings, but beyond these numbers we think the success of the Tamar Project lies in spreading awareness and in the relationship established with local communities, encouraging the culture of protection rather than predation. Fishermen who years ago killed turtles today work for the project.
At the visitor’s center you can see turtles of several species and of different sizes, together with specimens of other sea wildlife such as starfish, crabs and even a shark or two. Every afternoon at 5 p.m., from the end of December to mid-February, hatchlings are released on the beach right in front of the project facilities.
