Culture, art and customs are combined in an unforgettable landscape of crystal-clear waters and never-ending blue hues that will become imprinted in the memory of those visiting these islands. Each and every one of the Greek Islands has a peculiar architecture, mythology and hospitality that will make visitors fall in love with this land.
With over a million people, the Greek Islands can be divided in a number of archipelagos: the Cyclades, Dodecanese, Ionian, Sporades, North Aegean and those in the Saronic Gulf. Altogether they make up a mosaic of 2,000 islands, of which only around 200 are inhabited.
The largest and best known of them is the beautiful island of Crete. Its special location has made it a crossroads of cultures that have shaped its history, myths and traditions. The golden sand beaches and transparent waters have prompted the development of a flourishing tourist industry mainly in the north of the island, with two million visitors a year.
The Cyclades in the Aegean Sea are also well known, including the peace of Kea, the boisterous Mykonos, the fine sandy beaches of Milos and the impressive volcanic ledges of Santorini. Between the Cyclades and the coast of Turkey there is a succession of islands filling the Aegean Sea: the Dodecanese. The differing landscapes are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. The lush vegetation of the northern islands contrasts with the towns of small whitewashed houses. In Rhodes you will see the remains of the different peoples who have been present there over the centuries: the Greeks and Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Franks. Aside from Rhodes there are several other islands: Karpathos, Kasos, Simi, Tilos, Nisyros and Kos.
And we must also mention the impressive Ionian islands, including Korfu, Paxos, Lefkada and Ithaca, plus the islands in the Saronic Gulf, the Sporades and those in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. All of them make up an infinite succession of beautiful islands that are worth exploring and getting to know up close.
