One of the main tourist centers of the Costa del Sol is the beautiful town of Estepona, in the Andalusian province of Malaga. Snugly fit between the sea and the mountains, its coastline spans 23 kilometers and the average annual temperature is a wonderful 17° C (63° F). It is one of the best tourist destinations in Spain, a place where you can find nearly anything.
Its beaches have very fine sand and they are quite calm, with all the services you need and unique landscapes—you can see Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar when the sky is clear. Some of the best beaches go by the names of Playa del Cristo, Puro Beach, Playa de la Rada and Playa del Saladillo.
Estepona has a good number of restaurants, ranging from traditional Andalusian cuisine to delicious dishes from Italy or China. If you want to enjoy typical Andalusian tapas near Avenida del Carmen, try out La Ruta de la Plata II, and towards the port there are interesting restaurants such as La Escollera, El Arganeo and Orient Express. And of course you’ll find the famous chiringuitos, beachside bars all along the coast that you will surely enjoy.
The town features many interesting monuments, churches, squares and palaces that you can visit such as the Ermita del Calvario, Torre del Reloj, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (a Parish Church) and the Palacio de Congresos. Right in the old quarter there is a square known as Plaza de las Flores, decorated with flowers all year round and one of the oldest squares in town.
Not to be missed is the famous Parque de Los Pedregales, a park just a few kilometers from the center of town, in Sierra Bermeja. This park is a privileged vantage point for seeing the African coast and Gibraltar. And if you enjoy hiking, mountain bike or horseback riding, this is an excursion designed for you.
There’s a lot more to Estepona besides its fine beaches!
Less than an hour’s drive from Estepona you can visit interesting towns such as Casares, Ronda, Marbella, Castellar de la Frontera and Tarifa. Try it out!
Tip: If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss Selwo Aventura, a theme park and zoo spanning over 100 hectares where you can see over 2000 animals from all of the continents almost living freely. Besides seeing the animals, there are other activities such as bow and arrow, zip glides and a few shows featuring trained animals.
