The Canary Islands stand out in Europe as an area on the map with mild, sunny temperatures throughout most of the year. They are made up by islands featuring incredible beaches and spectacular landscapes that are not found anywhere else in the world. The trade winds from the ocean have made this archipelago one of the places with the best weather in Europe, thanks to the humid and cool winds of the Azores Anticyclone. This is the cause of the miracle climate that brings spring weather to these southern European islands.
The sea water temperature is likewise warm. It ranges from 18º C (64º F) in the winter months to 22º (72º F) in the summer. Adding to this the 2,700 hours of sunlight means that people can make the most of their days on the beach. The Canary Islands have nearly 1,500 kilometers of coastline. Here there are many ways to enjoy the sun and a privileged climate. There are extensive beaches of white sand in Fuerteventura and Tenerife, and small coves under the cliffs of the islands of La Gomera and El Hierro. There is an exotic landscape of dunes in Gran Canaria and beaches of volcanic sand in Lanzarote and La Palma.
But there is much more to the Canary Islands than its beaches; we can enjoy beautiful little villages, discover dreamlike landscapes and enjoy unique popular festivities. In Tenerife you can visit the Teide, go to a concert of traditional isas and folías songs, see guanche mummies at the Museum of Nature and Man or visit the Botanical Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz.
It is an excellent idea to spend New Year’s Eve in Tenerife, at the Plaza del Charco, a place where the locals eat their new year’s grapes against a backdrop of fireworks to continue celebrating in the streets with music provided by orchestras and mobile discos. The festivity par excellence in the Canary Islands, especially on the two major islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, is the Carnival in February. It is an explosion of fantasy, color and liveliness that you should experience at least once in a lifetime.
