Robert Nesta Marley Booker, better known as Bob Marley, was born on February 6 1945 in Nine Mile (Rhoden Hall, Saint Ann Parish), a small area in the north of the island of Jamaica. Everyone knows Bob Marley for his famous songs, such as “No Woman, No Cry”, “Jamming”, “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Redemption Song”. He was undoubtedly one of the best musicians ever and, although he left us very young due to cancer, nobody can forget his great contribution to music and the Rastafarian movement. In particular, his fellow Jamaicans who, year after year, on February 6, celebrate National Bob Marley Day.
On that day, in front of the tomb of Marley, in the Nine Mile cemetery, hundreds of Jamaicans stand silent and then, among whispers, sing the lyrics of his most renowned songs such as ‘Redemption Song’ and ‘Soul Rebel’. More than three decades after his death, the Jamaican singer, guitarist and song-writer continues to be the leading exponent of reggae worldwide and thousands of people across the world travel to the village where he was born and where today rest the remains of this reggae icon.
The tour begins in what was once the old earth-floored shack with no electricity, now a renovated museum, where Marley was born. Then head to Zion Rock hill, where the singer used to meditate. Keep going until you reach a place called The Pillow (the same as in the song Talking Blues) and finish off in the mausoleum to sing a well-known song or kiss the gravestone.
For 4 days, there are many events held in honor of the king of reggae. Concerts take place involving different artists, including some of his 14 children; they project videos of his life and work… 4 days on which Bob Marley is more the protagonist than ever in streets throughout Jamaica.
An ideal excuse for fans of the singer who, as well as commemorating his life and work, wish to take the opportunity to spend a vacation in the heat of this beautiful Caribbean island!
